Keeping Up by John F. McMullen Life in the Digital World goes on for your editor as well as, hopefully, for the readers of this magazine. In the last year, I have started a Social Network for those from my old neighborhood (Inwood, Manhattan, New York City, New York State, US) and watched it grow from two members to one thousand thirty-six (1,036) with two thousand four hundred six (2,406) photos posted (as of 05/25/09); published an on-demand collection of poetry, “Cashing A Check” (available in both soft cover and Kindle formats on Amazon); read over a hundred books on my Kindle and Kindle 2. I also tested many apps for my iPhone and G1 and started this publication. In short, it’s been a busy time. |

The Problem or the Solution: Can the Web be Both? A Special Report from Web 2.0 Expo by David Bunnell, West Coast Editor.
Introduction by Barbara McMullen --
Bunnell’s article was written in the midst of the excitement of the 3rd edition of Web 2.0 Expo San Francisco, the premier event co-produced by O’Reilly Media and TechWeb on March 31 to April 3, 2009.
Bunnell’s report was sent out to Weekly Update subscribers as a Special Update on May 11, 2009. We reproduce it in this issue for two reasons:
— First, David Bunnell covered a great deal of territory in his article, all of which is still current and relevant to you, our readers; and
— Second, the Expo took place as the country was just beginning to understand the depth of the economic problems facing it and yet, more than 8,000 people attended the event and, according to Bunnell, “the energy at the show was very upbeat — a good sign of things to come.”
David Bunnell is an industry pioneer, the founder of PC, PC World and Macworld as well as the former CEO and Editor-in-Chief of Upside Media.

BUSINESS MODELS |
|
Monetize by John F. McMullen The goal of every We 2.0 entrepreneur is to monetize the product. One can certainly wish to provide a useful service, tantalizing app, or informative publication but, unless the provider is independently wealthy and given to spending jillions for public service, the business is bound to fail without the development of a revenue stream. |

KillerStartups by Barbara E. McMullen I enjoy visiting KillerStartups.com, in spite of its need for editing. The site invites startup Internet companies to introduce themselves on KillerStartups.com to other entrepreneurs, investors, bloggers and those seeking exciting employment opportunities. The hope is that the community around the startup will virtually incubate it and enable it to fine-tune its technology and business model with the contributions of the community. |

Web 2.0 Is the Future of Education by Steve Hargadon A moment of extreme clarity became an obsession for me last week. A session that I had prepared for the IL-TCE conference went from "Web 2.0 Tools for the Classroom" to "Why Web 2.0 Is Important to the Future of Education." |

Newspapers & Magazines for Digital Natives by John F. McMullen In the Sunday New York News of May 24th, the comic feature, “The Lockhorns,” contained a panel showing a teenager overlooking Mr. Lockhorn’s shoulder as he reads a newspaper on the train and saying “Wow! You mean some of the information on the Internet is available in that form?” Funny? Yup! – but also prescient and a little sad. |

Technology in the cloud |

Microsoft Sees Azure Clouds by Stan Veit Microsoft won’t make the same mistake again that they did with the Internet.
Before browsers like Netscape set the computer user free, computer users were locked into the desktop of Windows, where Microsoft and its applications ruled he roost. Microsoft had to scramble to develop its own browser and give away free to regain its position at the top of the heap. |

Job Hunting in the Web 2.0 Jungle by Jason Mannino, Career Strategist "I just realized burnedoutdoc isn't the best Twitter name 4 job hunting. Also I should probably shave & put on a shirt for my Facebook pic, eh?" This was the status of someone in my Facebook network just this week. It confirmed for me that there are people who have not yet fully leveraged web 2.0 technology for job searching. In addition, with all these new "verbs" out there I have discovered that people often experience overwhelm when considering all of the current options. Do I "twitter?" Do I "facebook?" Do I "link" on linkedin?
Social Media Transformation Cycles by Jay Deragon, Social Media Srategist My brain isn’t always the sharpest and it takes time for me to grasp information and its relative meaning. Words carry lots of meaning and unless we really “read and listen to comprehend” we can miss the true value of someone’s work. If you’ve ever listen to or read something from someone smarter than you then you know what I mean. |
